In Sri Lanka, Genetech, a private company which supplies DNA profiles to the police, has set up a DNA bank. It reportedly contained DNA profiles of nearly 3,000 criminals by October 2011. To date, all forensic DNA testing has been conducted by private companies but a new Government laboratory has been set up with US Government funding and Government DNA testing will start in 2014.

Use of DNA evidence in Sri Lanka is governed by Section 45 of the Evidence Ordinance and Section 122 of the Code of Criminal Procedure as amended by Section 14 of 2005. There is no specific legislation or regulation of DNA databases. According to Interpol, aDNA database legislation had been adopted by 2011.
